Career details:

Bath Club President 1989-1991, Bath Club Life Member and Car Park attendant on match days!

He played rugby for England, Bath, Barbarians, Somerset (Captain 1951 to 1953), Wells and the Territorial Army.

Alec won the first of his England caps in 1952, when he was 31 years old!  He was destined to become Chairman of England Selectors and Team Manager for England tours of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.

In the Second World War he served with the 8th Army in North Africa,  Sicily and Italy and was wounded by an anti-personnel mine.

After recovering from injury, he played amateur soccer for Swindon Town. Fortuitously for Bath, he got into conversation with some rugby pals and soon found himself playing a couple of games at Centre.  A career move to Bristol and a keen rugby boss – and Alec was in for a trial with new club Bath. He plumped for the blind side wing forward berth and soon made it his own!

Respected by his myriad of friends throughout the rugby world, Alec truly symbolised the spirit of the Bath Club. Not many Clubs will ever have the privilege of having a Club President, Chairman of England Selectors and England Tour Manager as a Car Park attendant! A true Corinthian sportsman.

1950-51 was Alec’s first year of Bath captaincy. The Club’s no-nonsense style of forward play brought 27 wins, and this was not exceeded until sixteen years later under Peter Sibley.
