Career details:

Represented numerous sides in a rich amateur rugby career.  Simon was a rampaging  and fearless wing forward who always made ground with ball in hand.However he was often too quick for the other forwards and sometimes lost possession for lack of support. Among the teams he represented (that he could possibly remember !) are the County sides of  Devon, Hampshire, and Somerset,  He also represented the South West England XV, and was an England Final Trialist.

He toured with the Barbarians and competed in the Hong Kong 7’s in 1983.

“Have boots will travel” might well have been his motto. By the time of the 1984/85 ‘Census’, he is reputed to have graced rugby fields in Australia, Fiji, China, America, Canada, South Africa and Italy.

At one stage he returned to Bath and did a four year stint as an assistant coach to Jack Rowell.

In the professional era he played in Italy, Australia and Canada.

A teacher and a rugby coach he now travels the world “coaching the coaches” and entertaining tourists on Lions Tours with his friend Gareth Chilcott.

In addition to his appointment as Bath Rugby Team Manager during the  2006-2007 season, he was Managing Director of a sports education consultancy.

Simon sports a permanent sun tan and equally sunny disposition!

Simon Jones was born in the City but moved to Portsmouth when his father, a naval officer, was posted there. He was educated at Stoneyhurst College, Lancashire and then studied as a teacher at St. Mark and St. John College, Plymouth. While there he played for three seasons for Plymouth Albion, and made his first county appearance for Devon. He then returned to play for Gosport, Fareham, and Havant.

He joined Bath midway through the 1977-78 season, but played only one 1st XV game before having a knee operation.
