In The Bath Football Herald on 21st January, ‘W.J.S.’ shared Club concern at falling attendances. His view on the reduction in support was encapsulated in the headline:-
MORE LOCAL MEN IN SIDE MAY BRING BACK CROWDS (Extract)
FEW LOCAL MEN
“One train of thought has it that the lack of interest is because there are few really local men in the present side and the Servicemen who are playing, do not attract so many people. It is felt that if more encouragement was given to the local men it would bring back the crowds such as those seen just before and after the war.
But in those days there was no National Service. What can a Club do if a top-class ‘foreign’ player comes along?
Must they ignore him? A case in point with Bath is star scrum-half Ron Shuttleworth. He is not always available, admittedly, but when he does play he is worth his weight in gold and surely is the sort of player who people will come to watch.
But, on the other hand, there certainly are those who wish to watch only their relatives and friends.
Only supporters themselves can answer that argument, but still they should be prepared to give as much encouragement as possible to any Bath XV which may take the field.”
