It is interesting to note the team selection for Bath Youth versus Basingstoke this weekend.
R Creed, Garry Frankcom, A Jenkins, G Lye, J Orzabal, A Jones, M Hughes, E Hitch, J Dean, P Cox, J Morrison, A Colenutt, P Beazer (Capt.), A Cowan, N Stroud. Replacements: M Armstrong, S Knight, T Unwin, and D Nesbitt.
Several of these youngsters were destined to make their mark in senior rugby.

MANCOM 6/10/1981
It was agreed to replace the Flower Pot Stands over the next two years and spend a maximum of £1000 on a sprinkler pump for the Recreation ground.
Proposal to help coach local Clubs was approved.
BATH’S COUNTY CALLS
10/10/1981 Somerset 9 Cornwall 18.
Somerset selected six Bath players Ralston, Horton (Capt.), Chilcott, Cunningham, Williams and Lye.
Cornwall fielded Martin, Trevaskis and Spurrell.
Following a shoulder injury, it was announced that John Palmer would be out for the rest of the season.

There was concern that spectators were getting in without paying. Agreed that Volunteer Committeemen would stand at every gate, beginning with the London Scottish game. The Public were also viewing matches from a bank in front of the Sports Centre.
It was announced that Alan Rees, a centre, had joined the club from Bristol.

Proposals for extending the Clubhouse into the North Stand were discussed in detail. Estimated building cost £179,300:00.
MANCOM 2/2/1982
It was reported that Mrs. Mabel Redwood had been very successful raising funds with her raffles at home matches.
A Scrummaging Machine had been purchased from J Moore and Sons at a cost of £66. There was a condition of purchase; a small building was to be erected to house it.
MURPHY RESIGNS
27 year old Damian Murphy finally confirmed his resignation as Bath Captain. It had been “a season of utter frustration.” He had played only two first class games since commencing as captain in September. He had hoped for some improvement since his cartilage operation, but was then beset with heavy business pressures. To cap it all, he was involved in a car accident, at which he was concussed.
MANCOM 2/3/1982
K Neale was sent off in Bath United v Cwmbran game. In view of unpleasant aspects of the last game, it was recommended that fixtures with Cwmbran be cancelled.
Hooker Rob Cunningham was selected as a Replacement for the Scottish team.
Simon Jones selected for Barbarians 7’s team to play in the Hong Kong Sevens.
Damian Murphy had asked Roger Spurrell to act as Vice- Captain, and it was agreed that Spurrell continue as Captain for the rest of the season.
Walcot Old Boys had been unable to use Lambridge for a time, due to damage caused by trespassing hippies. For this reason, Walcot had been unable to stage the Combination Sevens at Lambridge. An ex gratia payment of £50 was made to Walcot, to help compensate for their financial loss.
Estimate for an irrigation scheme for the Recreation Ground was £1249.00.
Approval to go ahead with improvements to Clubhouse and North Stand.

Chris Martin and Simon Halliday had been selected for the R.F.U. Under 23 Tour of Italy in May.
MANCOM 6/7/1982
It was reported that Chris Martin had been selected to play for the England Students’ Tour of Japan.
JIM DEPARTS
22nd March 1982 brought the announcement that Jim Waterman would be severing a 14- year link with the Bath Club. The 37- year old full back made his first senior appearance against Ebbw Vale in 1968. He was to finally appear on the 17th April 1982 against Llanelli – 416 games later! On the 26th April, there was a farewell game, with teams made up of Bath colleagues, providing an appropriate send-off for this outstanding player and personality.
He was taking up a teaching post in West Somerset School. Minehead.
