Career details:
Brian Cusack spent two seasons with Bath at the beginning of the professional era having signed for the club from Irish League side Bective Rangers. While with Bective Rangers, Brian had also gained representative honours for Leinster and Ireland ‘A’. Born in Waterford, Brian was a gifted athlete and even earned representative athletics vests for Ireland at Junior and Senior levels. The 6 foot 7” second row made his Bath Rugby bow in the 87-15 home win over Swansea in the short-lived Anglo-Welsh Competition, and did enough to hold on to his place for the following league game against Wasps (which was lost 36-40). In his first season with the club the second row duties were shared between Martin Haag, Nigel Redman and Cusack, with Dan Lyle filling in when required. A first, and ultimately only, Bath try came in the 76-7 record league defeat of Bristol and when Five Nations time came around, Brian was included in the Ireland ‘A’ side for matches with Wales ‘A’, England ‘A’ and Scotland ‘A’. He also earned a call-up for the 1997 Ireland summer tour. The signing of German Llanes and the pre-eminence of Haag and Redman made sure that Cusack’s second season amounted to only eight matches (of which three were as a replacement), and in a bid to gain first team rugby he left to join Richmond. Latterly, Brian was seen turning out for Irish Province Ulster back in his native land.
