Career details:
When Bath signed flying Irish winger Simon Geoghegan in the autumn of 1994, from London Irish, it was seen as a major coup and another piece in the Bath Rugby master plan. Geoghegan was very much a Bath player in the making. His speed and finishing ability were seen as the ideal complement to Jeremy Guscott’s breaks and the Bath faithful were hopeful of a stack of tries from the winger. He didn’t disappoint on his debut. On 3rd September 1994 Simon was selected for Bath for the first time against the star studded Barbarians outfit in a pre-season friendly at the Rec. In an entertaining match, Bath laid down their challenge for the season winning 23-18 and Geoghegan was the star of the show crossing for a brace of tries. However, an injury jinx struck Geoghegan and he only made eleven appearances that season, but almost unbelievably he scored ten tries. Hopes were therefore high at the start of the 1996/1997 season and when he made a successful comeback, scoring at Orrell in the opening league victory, hopes were raised once more. For Simon and his legions of fans it was all unfortunately to end in tears. A recurring toe injury forced his premature retirement from the game at the end of a long and ultimately unsuccessful battle for fitness. Eleven tries in 13 matches for Bath, 11 in 37 internationals for Ireland and six in four for the Barbarians are the fitting rugby memories that he left the game with.
