Leighton was capped 5 times for Wales between 1954 and 1956. He was in the Welsh team which won 8 – 3 against England at Twickenham in 1956.

He learnt his rugby at Tredegar, where as a schoolboy, he played Fullback – but not for long! They found out he was a great No 8 and all his first class rugby was played in that position.

He became a Flight Lieutenant in the RAF and skippered the Combined Services and Royal Air Force. Service duties took him all over the country and besides Bath from 1962 to 1964 he played for Newport 1953/59, Loughborough, Leicester 1959/61 and London Welsh 1961/62.

Retired from the RAF with the rank of Squadron Leader.
