Dear Bath Rugby Heritage,
We wondered whether you might like to add the attached photograph to the Team Photographs section of the website?
The original photograph belongs to my brother-in-law, Paul Webster, who inherited it from his grandfather J T Webster, and it shows the Bath team that played against Stade Bordelais on the 17th April 1922.
Back Row: W H Sheppard, J T Webster, C E Carruthers, R S Chaddock, C N Mannings, N Blake
Middle Row: H J Comm, H Richardson, H Vowles, J Russell, L J Richardson,
Front Row: Dr F A Meine, S G U Considine, A E Morgan, L W Bisgrove
J T Webster actually made his debut for Bath on 10th September 1921 v Teignmouth, having joined the club from Harlequins. He is, however, erroneously recorded as ‘F Webster’ in that match report, but his initials appear correctly in the following week’s report on the game v Gloucester. He was an accomplished all-round sportsman who went on to play both rugby and cricket for Durham, including games against touring sides from New Zealand (‘The Invincibles’), and Australia in 1924 and 1925 respectively. He had also been in the same athletics team as Harold Abrahams whilst at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge at the beginning of the decade.
Regards,
Ben Sennett
